Lesson Title: The Day After Tomorrow

State Standards: GLEs/GSEs

PS1 (7-8) – 4 Students demonstrate an understanding of states of matter by …explaining the effect of increased and decreased heat energy on the motion and arrangement of molecules.
PS2 (7-8) – 7 Students demonstrate an understanding of heat energy by…explaining the difference among conduction, convection and radiation and creating a diagram to explain how heat energy travels in different directions and through different materials by each of these methods.

Context of Lesson:

Students will use this lesson to complete a comparison between science in the real world and movie science. This film will be contrasted against An Inconvenient Truth.

  • The Day After Tomorrow Movie Guide Sheet

Classroom Environment:

  • Students will be working individually at their lab tables.

Differential Instruction:

Students with a document disability will be given the Inconvenient Truth Guide Sheet with portions of it filled in.

Objectives:

Students will be able to identify examples of thermal radiation, conduction, convection to 90% proficiency.

Instruction:

Opening:

Students will be given a short entrance quiz asking how they would go about determining science from science fiction.

Engagement:

The students will first be reminded that at any time the have a question about the content we can stop the movie and discuss . Also at various point of the movie we will be stopping to discuss key items. Also during the movie the students will be filling The Day After Tomorrow Movie Guide (See Attached File).

Closure:

The students will need to hand in their movie guide at the end of class. There will also be a reminder to keep working on their projects and that we will watch the second part of the movie tomorrow.
